Opening: Sex in Rooms, Las Vegas
***FULL DISCLOSURE***
I was followed around by Rachel Waniewski and her mad photography skills for 4 of the 6 days I spent in Vegas. She took every shot in this post and I am in nearly ALL of them.
YAY VANITY!
Thank god she is a miracle worker with that camera, too, because I was SEVERELY sleep deprived for the entire trip.
****
Hi!
So after 3 weeks on the road, I'm finally home! Happy new year!
We took our family up on a ginormous road trip to see my grandparents in Anacortes, WA (that's the tippy-top point of the map before you hit canada), stopping along the way in Big Sur, Shasta, Portland, and Seattle, and then adding San Francisco and Pismo Beach on the way back, arriving back in LA on December 30th, early in the morning.
On the 2nd, I left for Las Vegas, driving solo, to finish a body of work, paint a mural on the outer gallery wall, and open a show at Sin City Gallery.
My show, Sex in Rooms, was part of a larger event, Anima Motrix, curated by Jessica Lo, which itself was part of Las Vegas' citywide First Friday monthly arts festival.
"joe and lucy", 36x36, Sin City Gallery.
I spent 2 days finalizing my work for the opening--prints were arriving from the LA darkroom I use for 2 photographs, framing had to be done, and one painting needed to be finished.
On the 4th, Rachel got into town and I and started my mural while she started taking pictures. She documented every move we made from here on out, so I have some pretty great images from this process.
step 1: whitewashing the previous mural.
Step 2: layout the entire composition-- 11x13 feet, 4 figures-- in sharpie.
it took a lot of sharpie.
step 3: mix oil paints. LOTS of oil paints!
step 5: Start adding color!
step 6: more color!
just for scale. it's huge!
the mural. 3 am. SLEEP.
next day-- the preview. Sweater, Urban Outfitters. tired glazed look, all mine, with special thanks to the 2 hours of sleep I managed to get the night before.
aaaaand the next night, relaxing before the opening. at the Jasmine at the Bellagio. Top, Chen Lu.
Have you ever been more in love with dishes?
Has a restaurant ever managed to become more closely identified with such iconic chinaware?
I swear, the Jasmine without the Versace dishes would not be the same place.
I've been dreaming of this china since the first time I saw it, at 17.
China, Versace.
obligatory I'm tired shot.

Korin turned 30!
Soooo, Korin Faught turned 30 and I am going to-- what else?-- talk about clothes and handbags and parties. I'm deep like that.
first, outfit post. There's a lot of news here, even though there's not much outfit. First news is OHMYGOD I FINALLY GOT NEW GLASSES. I can see! Glasses, custom tint lenses in yellow illesteva frames. PS These frames were suggested to me by the world's most androgyneously adorable shopgirlboy in the world on robertson, who I hope makes friends with me one day.
So let's make that happen.
AHEM.
Second news is that Jennifer Nicholson moved from her insane victorian glamorpad in santa monica (sadness!!! SADNESS!! I was hoping to have my funeral in that backyard one day!!), and on friday she had an estate sale to clear out her house. Sooooooo, since I have no willpower and get to call all my shopping "research" (rightrightright??) I went at the moment it opened and grabbed everything I could. More on that in a seperate post because there really is a lot to talk about aside from this Jennifer Nicholson pirate dress but OMGOMGOMG JENNIFER NICHOLSON PIRATE DRESS you guys! Chiffon tea length with velvet ribbon details at the sleeve and hem, and a babydoll bodice, which I usually hate but works here somehow.
Hermes bangle. Oh-so-glamorous hairtie on my wrist. My "joleen" clutch. You can see my engagement and wedding ring here; both are vintage from Druckers in silverlake.* Alaia nude platform heels down there somewhere, but I really didn't plan the photographing of this outfit very well--I actually put it on IN THE CAR after a less fancy brunch with family (which was after a nicer, but also casual, brunch before it...)**, so I ended up lifting this shot, and the one below, from the lovely miss Kristin Burns.
OMG korin looked fabulous. custom lambskin collar and oxblood "krampus" leather mask. L'Wren Scott dress I think? She had a mustache drawn on in eyeliner, which was
weirdly genius. BUT SO GENIUS.
She's opening a box containing another Joleen bag, if yer nosy like that.
THERE'S THE MUSTACHE! Photo Matt Groler. HI EDWARD GOREY HANDPAINTED CAKE!! HOW ARE YOU??????? I ALMOST DIDN'T SEE YOU THERE BEHIND THAT FIRE ON TOP OF YOU.
and Hiiiiiiiiiiii guys--Kristin Burns, Michael Dahan, and Sarah Folkman. <3 Michael's scarf. YAY men in pink.
* Lydia and Van picked out my ring together, and LYDIA, not Van, knew my ring size. It seems so trivial, but I love this story so much-- ladies, if you are ever doubt how meaningful and real your relationships with your girlfriends are, this is what I always go back to. Who knows your ringsize? Inevitably, it will be a girlfriend. INEVITABLY.
**for those keeping track, this puts us at brunch number three. Since I am a very fancy lady, I made sure to eat delicious plates full of food plus cake three (3) whole times before 2 pm. I am hungry now thinking about it thank you very much. I am not kidding.
